Old numbers stop working on 1 December 2026

Until then, both formats work. After that, any 7-digit number still saved in your phone will simply fail to connect.

Why this matters

A national change, in every phone

PURA, The Gambia's Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, has migrated the national numbering plan from 7 digits to 9. Every mobile number saved in every phone needs its operator prefix added. With hundreds of contacts that is slow and easy to get wrong — and one mistyped digit means someone you can no longer reach.

Now live
4 September 2026

The new 9-digit format goes live nationwide.

Transition
30 November 2026

Both old and new formats work until this date. Time to migrate.

Hard cutoff
1 December 2026

Old 7-digit numbers stop working completely.

How it works

You stay in control the whole way

Jokko9 never changes a number without showing you first.

1

Scans your contacts

Reads every contact saved on your phone and checks which numbers still use the old format.

2

Identifies the operator

Works out whether each number is Africell, QCell, Comium or Gamcel from its first digit.

3

Proposes the new number

Applies PURA's official rules to build the correct 9-digit version of each number.

4

Shows you every change

Accept it, edit it yourself, or skip it. Nothing is written until you approve.

5

Updates them in bulk

Applies everything you approved at once, instead of editing contacts one at a time.

6

Keeps your originals

Every original number is stored on your device, so any change can be undone at any time.

Migration rules

PURA's official rules, applied exactly

The original number is never altered — an operator prefix is added in front of it.

OperatorNumbers starting withRuleExample
Africell2, 4, 7Add 877123456 → 877123456
QCell3, 5Add 833123456 → 833123456
Comium6, 8Add 866123456 → 866123456
Gamcel9No change9123456 → 9123456

Internationally, numbers are written as +220 followed by the 9-digit national number.

It never guesses

Anything uncertain is flagged, not changed

Jokko9 recognises the awkward cases and asks you, rather than assuming. These are surfaced for review, never rewritten silently.

Wrongly prefixed GamcelNumbers given an 89 prefix by mistake are detected and offered back at 7 digits.
Fixed linesLandline ranges starting 42, 43 and 448 are flagged, not migrated.
Already migratedNumbers already in valid 9-digit form are left alone and marked done.
Non-Gambian numbersInternational contacts are recognised and skipped.
Unrecognised prefixesIf a number doesn't match any known operator range, you're asked to check it.
The 220 edge caseSome Africell numbers legitimately start 220. It is only read as the country code when unambiguous.

Behind Jokko9

Built in The Gambia, for Gambians

The team

Jokko9 was created by three final-year Computer Science students at the University of The Gambia, who saw the migration coming and built the tool the country needed. They presented the project to PURA, and the app implements the authority's published rules.
